Start early at Knossos
Knossos is one of Crete’s best-known archaeological sites. Arriving early helps avoid the strongest heat and busiest period, particularly in high season.
A guide or good audio commentary makes the different building phases, palace rooms and reconstructions much easier to understand.
Heraklion Archaeological Museum
Many finds from Knossos and other Minoan sites are displayed at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Visiting after Knossos helps put its artefacts and frescoes into context.

Old harbour and city centre
Finish with a walk past the Venetian harbour, Lion Fountain and central shopping streets. Heraklion is compact enough to connect its main central sights on foot.
Families or visitors with less interest in archaeology can combine Heraklion with Cretaquarium instead of visiting both archaeological attractions.
