From Mochos through Krasi to Lasithi
The road from Mochos soon climbs into the mountains. Krasi makes an enjoyable first stop for coffee, a stroll through the village and its famous old plane tree beside the springs. The route then continues towards the Lasithi Plateau.
The journey is part of the experience, with changing views of mountains, olive groves and small villages along the way.
Windmills and plateau villages
Lasithi is a fertile plateau surrounded by mountains. Historic windmills near its entrances and villages scattered across the plain create a landscape quite unlike Crete’s north coast.
Allow time for lunch in a village and a relaxed drive around the plateau rather than treating the area as a quick stop on the way to one attraction.
Dikteon Cave
Above Psychro lies Dikteon Cave, commonly called the Cave of Zeus. Expect a steep uphill walk to the entrance and potentially slippery steps inside, so sturdy footwear is sensible.
Check current opening hours and access before setting out. During summer, an early start helps avoid the strongest heat and busiest period.
