Choose the pace before you leave
Richtis, Sitia and Vai lie in the same easterly direction, but together create a long and active day. Start early and decide whether walking or beach time matters most.
If you plan to walk the full gorge, keep the stops in Sitia or Vai shorter. For a slower experience, save the gorge for a separate excursion.
Richtis Gorge and waterfall
Richtis Gorge is known for green vegetation, old stone bridges, watermills and a waterfall. The path can be slippery and uneven, so bring sturdy footwear, water and enough time.
Weather affects the walk. Check locally that the route is accessible and avoid entering the gorge during unsafe conditions.
Sitia and Vai
Sitia is a convenient place for lunch or coffee beside the harbour before continuing towards Crete’s far northeast.
Vai is famous for its palm grove and beach. It can be busy in high season, so a later visit or travelling outside the peak months may feel more relaxed.
